Abortion Care Tennessee
Funding and resources for Tennesseans seeking abortion.
What we do & how we do it.
ACT funds procedural costs for Tennesseans traveling to access abortion. We provide block grants to our partner clinics, who distribute the funds to patients.
ACT is unapologetically pro-abortion. We believe in everyone’s right to access the care they need, when and where they need it. We believe that our community is strong, and together we can support the most vulnerable Tennesseans in their search for abortion care.
We celebrate bodily autonomy, and the joy of helping each other access our rights.

FAQs
-
Abortion Care Tennessee (ACT) is a nonprofit abortion fund dedicated to removing barriers and increasing access to reproductive and sexual health care—including safe abortion care—for all people in Tennessee. ACT supports Tennesseans who are forced to travel out of state for abortion care due to Tennessee's total abortion ban by funding their procedures through trusted out-of-state clinics.
-
No, abortion is not currently legal in Tennessee. Following the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, Tennessee enacted a total abortion ban on August 25, 2022. This law includes no exceptions for rape, sexual assault, or incest. While there is a narrow and vague exception for life endangerment, the “burden of proof” placed on healthcare providers is so high that it effectively prevents timely medical intervention for patients in critical condition.
-
Tennesseans seeking abortion care should contact the closest abortion clinic where they have made an appointment and ask if the clinic has funding available through Abortion Care Tennessee. ACT provides block grants directly to select abortion clinics that regularly serve patients from Tennessee, and those clinics apply ACT’s funds to cover the cost of appointments.

The current abortion landscape in Tennessee is one of the most restrictive and dangerous in the country. As of August 25, 2022, Tennessee enforces a total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, sexual assault, or incest. The only legal exception is for life endangerment, but the law is so vague and restrictive that it often prevents doctors from acting in time to save their patients.
Tennessee also prohibits medication abortion via telehealth, limits abortion provision to licensed physicians, and criminalizes providers who violate the ban. In July 2024, the state implemented a “travel ban for minors,” requiring young people seeking abortion care out of state to present notarized parental consent. This places even more dangerous barriers in front of youth, undocumented people, and those unable to meet the new documentation requirements.
Additionally, Tennessee continues to fund anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) while placing extreme limits on legitimate abortion providers.
The reality is that access in Tennessee doesn’t just mean abortion is illegal—it means the system is designed to punish, delay, and control those who need care. Abortion funds and clinics remain some of the only sources of real, compassionate support for Tennesseans in need.

Reproductive Justice is a human rights framework that centers the right of every person to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children they do have in safe and sustainable communities.
It goes beyond the concept of "choice" to focus on access—recognizing that the legal right to abortion is meaningless without the resources, support, and community infrastructure to actually obtain that care.
The term “Reproductive Justice” was coined in 1994 by a group of Black women in Chicago who saw that the mainstream women’s rights movement, led by and for wealthy white women, often failed to address the needs of people of color, low-income communities, and trans and nonbinary people.
Reproductive justice combines reproductive rights with social justice and insists that everyone deserves access to care—regardless of race, gender, income, immigration status, or geographic location.

Supporting abortion justice means taking action to ensure that abortion care is accessible, affordable, and free from shame.
You can support abortion justice by donating to your local abortion funds like Abortion Care Tennessee, supporting independent abortion clinics, and uplifting reproductive justice organizations in your community.
You can also tell your abortion story—or listen, without judgment, to the stories of people you love. These acts help break down stigma and build the collective power we need to make change.
In banned states like Tennessee, it’s especially important to focus your support locally, where communities are under direct attack. Whether you live in Tennessee or elsewhere, your voice, your donations, and your willingness to speak up and act in solidarity matter deeply.
Abortion has always existed, and it always will—but making sure that abortion care is safe, supported, and resourced is something we must all work toward together.
